AHSAA Golf: Haleyville Boys and Pike Road Girls Win Best Rounds on Day 1 of State Tournament

Class 7A golfer James Clemens Jack Mitchell and Michael Heaton of Bayshore Christian 1A/2A – both qualified for the 73rd AHSAA State Golf Championships – led the pack in scoring 4 under the par 68 on opening day at Huntsville’s Robert Trent Jones Hampton Cove Golf Course on Monday.

Class 4A Haleyville had the day’s best team score with a 9 of 297 and hold a 31-stroke lead over Randolph in the men’s event.

Molly Davidson of 7A Hewitt-Trussville led the girls competition with a 2-under 70. Huntsville leads the 7A class with a 13-over 229, 4 strokes better than Spain Park.

Pike Road leads the Class 4A/5A women’s tournament with a plus-15,231. White Plains is second with a plus-31.

Other team leaders on the boys’ side are 7A Vestavia Hills (plus-12) and Auburn (plus-14); 6A Mountain Brook (plus-13) and St. Paul’s (plus-16); 5A UMS-Wright (plus-17) and Guntersville (plus-30); 3A Bayside Academy (plus-31) and Opp (plus-54); and 1A/3A Elba (plus-48) and Brantley (plus-51).

The girls team leaders are 6A UMS-Wright (plus-23) and Hartselle (plus-25); 1A/3A Mars Hill (plus-37) and Trinity (plus-48).

Jay Clemmer shot 72 for Vestavia Hills and teammate Ward Harris shot 73 to help the Rebels take first place in Class 7A. Auburn teammates Conner Jones and Will Stelt both shot 2 for 74 to keep the Tigers close.

Buddy Fleming of St. Paul tied to hold a one-shot lead over Thomas Norris of Mountain Brook in Class 6A play. The Spartans and St. Paul’s have four golfers in the top 12 on Day 1. Fifteen golfers are grouped within 80 after the first 18 holes.

UMS-Wright is 13 strokes ahead of defending Class 5A champion Guntersville. Will Howard led UMS-Wright and Guntersville was paced by John Bruce as the two golfers tied 72. Quincey Leonard of Pike Road finished third with a 76.

Haleyville had three golfers in the top four with Hudson Lawson at 2-under 70, Jack Temple in second at 72 and Jack Lawson in fourth at 4-of 76.

Luke Ferguson and Cole Komyati shot 2 of 74 to lead Bayside Academy to the breakpoint in Game 3A. Weaver’s Nick Ledbetter, playing as an individual qualifier, shot 6 of 78.

Elba’s Jay Wilson fired a 7-over to help the Tigers top the 1A/2A standings. His teammates Collin Sauls had an 83 and Peyton McCart an 84.

Grissom’s Grace Engel, who shot 8-under 63 in last week’s North Sub-State tournament, tied Monday to trail Class 7A Davidson Hewitt in the race for individual medalists.

Frances Brown fired 1 under to help UMS-Wright to the top of the 6A standings. Hartselle’s Jinger Heath and Jasper’s Alley’s Beth Waldrop shot in rounds of 3 of 75.

In the women’s 4A/5A game, Beka Yang of Pike Road fired 2 shots and teammate Yvette Gaston had a plus-3 75 helping the Patriots to a 16-shot lead over defending champion White Plains.

Brindlee Mountain’s Ellie Cothran and Lindsay Lane’s Chloe Ruble are tied for the top of the 1A/3A standings with 2 of 74. Defending Bayside Academy champion Causey Thompson is a shot back from the leaders.
