Women’s Golf | March 01, 2022

First-year student Amari Avery became the first Trojan to win consecutive events in nine years and led a starting five that all finished in the top 8 while setting a school record for margin of victory on Tuesday (March 1) at The Gold Rush at Old Ranch CC

The Trojans, who put in a record performance for under-par shots in their first win of the season last week at Houston, upended another school standard today by winning The Gold Rush by 36 strokes, two better than the brand they established last year at the same event. .

USC won at 1-under 863 (288-289-286), defending its title here and winning The Gold Rush for the third time. UCLA was second at 35 and Hawaii third at 39. It’s Troy’s first two-game winning streak since winning the Silverado Showdown and the Pac-12 Championship last April.

Avery won his second trophy in as many weeks with a 5-under 211 (69-74-68), becoming the first Trojan — and first USC freshman — since Annie Park to win twice from continued. Park, like Avery, was a freshman in the spring semester when she finished the 2013 season by winning the Pac-12, NCAA Regional, and NCAA championships.

Avery’s teammates drove up the standings throughout the tournament. Senior Katherine Muzi posted his second-best result as a Trojan by taking second place at 1 of 217 (70-75-72) in his first year Xin (Cindy) Ko locked up his fourth top 5 of the year in fourth at 3 of 219 (73-74-72). His last round was his team’s best 12th round par or better.

Second year students Brianna Navarrosa (76-73-74) and Michaela Morard (79-68-76) tied for eighth at 7 of 223. It was the fourth straight time that Morard improved his result from the previous event while Navarrosa earned his fourth top-16 finish.

“It’s been an incredibly good week for a group that’s worked very hard and very smart to get here,” the USC coach said. Justin Silverstein, who now has 16 tag team titles to his credit. “They should be very proud of themselves for the way they handled this tough golf course this week and the way they performed during that three-tournament streak that we just played.

“Amari’s back-to-back wins have been great fun to watch and the best is yet to come for her as a Trojan golfer. This group needs a rest and then we’ll start preparing for our next event which is a semi-match at home to Palos Verdes Golf Club.”

Second year Christine Wangplaying individually, tied for 26th at 16 of 232 (77-80-75).

Avery, whose two wins in one season are the first for a Trojan since Allisen Corpuz last year, now has five rounds in the 60s in nine outings and has three top 6 finishes in as many tries.

Including Muzi’s win in the fall, USC earned three individual wins for the first time since earning four medal honors in the 2018-19 season. USC also won two events in one season for the 13th consecutive season.
