Audubon announces gradual reopening plan for zoo, aquarium and park

Audubon Nature Institute announced on Tuesday its intention to reopen its facilities after closures due to the impacts of Hurricane Ida in two phases. The first phase begins Thursday with the reopening of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center. The second phase will include the opening of Audubon Zoo, Audubon Park Golf Club and Audubon Park Tennis on Saturday, September 18, 2021, according to a press release from Audubon officials. Portions of the Audubon Park jogging trail are slated to reopen for limited use this week. Bicycles will not be allowed until the entire park opens this Saturday. Audubon is offering a 50% discount on all zoo and aquarium admissions to Louisiana residents. The offer is valid online and at the front door for a maximum of four tickets from September 16 to October 3, 2021, according to the press release issued by Audubon. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our community who have been affected by the storm,” Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman said in a statement. “We hope that a visit to the zoo or aquarium and the opportunity to connect with the natural world can bring some comfort to our community during this difficult time.” Animals in the care of dedicated Audubon staff performed well throughout the storm, according to Audubon officials. Although the facilities lost power for an extended period, the activation of Audubon’s robust hurricane plan, which includes multiple levels of energy contingencies, has protected the thousands of animals in the parks and museums of ‘Audubon.
