Future Brentwood elite athletes will be able to use the recreation and sports facilities at the Brentwood Center free of charge.

The Brentwood Borough Council has agreed to join the Free Access for National Sports People (FANS) program, which aims to provide athletes at national level and above with free access to recreational and sports facilities for their personal training and development.

In Essex the program is managed by Active Essex and athletes who meet the criteria can apply to Active Essex to be part of the program.

To be eligible, athletes must be a member of a national team or team, or be among the top 10 nationally in their sport, and be a resident or belong to a club in the district to which they are applying. to use the FANS program.

Currently, 10 boroughs in Essex are part of the program; Basildon, Braintree, Colchester, Epping Forest, Harlow, Maldon, Rochford, Southend on Sea, Tendring and Uttlesford, Essex.

At a meeting of the Brentwood Borough Council Community and Health Committee on September 13, councilors expressed the positive impact they thought joining the program would have.

It was also explained that all athletes participating in the program would be invited to give lectures.

Councilor Gary White said: “I think it’s a great idea, especially after the Olympics and Paralympics.

“I think we will know the stories of gold medalists who had to run startup campaigns, one of which lived in Essex, and if there is anyone like that in the Brentwood area, I am sure the community would be more than happy to be a part of their success and support.

“I would very much appreciate the idea that these elite young athletes could visit schools, for example, to talk about their experiences promoting the sport in exchange for the advice that grants them these benefits. “

Committee advisers voted unanimously in favor of joining the FANS program.
