Broadstreet RFC chosen by Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as the venue for rugby sevens training

The Broadstreet Rugby Club has received a “massive boost” after being named the official training venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Binley Woods-based venue has been selected as one of two Sevens Rugby training venues, ahead of games which will take place July 29-31 next year at the nearby Coventry Building Society Arena.

Birmingham 2022 chose Broadstreet’s Ivor Preece pitch because of its four “World Rugby standard pitches” as well as “changing rooms and large internal spaces that teams can use before or after training”.

The grounds were used by the Gallagher Premiership Wasps club for five years before moving from the site to move into a new facility in Henley-in-Arden this summer.

Broadstreet Rugby Club Head Coach Brett Daynes said: “Having the Broadstreet Rugby Club as a training venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be a huge boost and it’s a huge opportunity, not only for the club but also for the wider area of ​​Coventry. and Warwickshire.

“We have four magnificent world-class pitches and look forward to welcoming rugby players from across the Commonwealth to our club. “

The second rugby sevens training site is the Cryfield Sports Pavilion on the University of Warwick campus, which is one of the Commonwealth Games campus villages. The university also provides elite training facilities for judo and wrestling.

The University of Birmingham swimming pool and athletics track will now also be used by competing nations and territories. A state-of-the-art boxing and netball training site will be established in a hall at the NEC.

Other local facilities in the West Midlands that have been selected as training venues include the Wyndley Recreation Center in Sutton Coldfield for triathlon, paratriathlon and hockey; Moseley Cricket Club in Solihull for Women’s T20 Cricket; and the King Edward School in Birmingham for Rhythmic Gymnastics and Track and Field.
