CHS women’s golf, men’s tennis and volleyball teams score wins on Wednesday

Cheshire High School Women’s Golf (8-2) earned a 189-190 win over St. Paul Catholic (8-2) at Southington Country Club on Wednesday. Junior Sydney Hidalgo shot a 41 to finish medalist, while second Sophia DelRosso shot a 45.

Senior Mackenzie Corcoran posted a 50 and rookie Olivia Beach had a 53. Senior co-captain Rileigh Erickson contributed a 57 and second Sabrina DiRubba had a 60.

Thursday at CSC, CHS faces Berlin (7-1) at 3 p.m.

Baseball (8-8)

For the second time this year, the Rams lost to Notre Dame-West Haven (8-8). This time, CHS lost 10-0 after five sets.

The Green Knights scored twice in the third inning. ND-WH scored a run in the fourth, then used a seven-run fifth inning to claim the victory under the mercy rule.

For CHS, junior pitcher Ben Strout allowed three hits and two walks. He also recorded two strikeouts in four innings.

Sophomores Max Bernstein (three hits, four walks) and Aiden Erickson (strikeout) pitched in relief. Erickson’s appearance represented his college debut.

Junior ND-WH pitcher Nicholas Hunkele gave up the singles only to senior co-captain Luca Raccio and junior Ryan Barbieri.

On Thursday, Cheshire hosts Shelton (9-6) at 4 p.m. The Gaels posted a 5-1 victory in the first encounter on April 26.

Volleyball for boys (13-3)

The Rams came back to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20) at Shelton (9-5). Senior tri-captain Tim Nugent compiled 35 assists, five kills, three aces and three digs.

Sophomore Will Allen recorded a career-high 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior Gianluca Giardina finished with 10 kills, while schoolmate Jake Miller had seven kills and two digs.

Junior Jason Cafourek added six kills and four digs.

May 17, CHS returns to host Simsbury (8-8) at 6 p.m.

Boys tennis (6-6)

At Wesleyan University in Middletown, Cheshire beat host Xavier (4-10), 4-3, for the second time this spring. Senior captain Utsav Subramani (6-0, 6-0), junior Andrew Gershfeld (6-3, 6-2), senior Tyler Tan (6-0, 6-4) and rookie Finn Hickey (6- 0, 2-6, 6-4) won a singles sweep.

Subramani extended his season unbeaten.

Thursday, the Rams face Notre Dame-West Haven at 3:45 p.m.

Girls tennis (6-5)

The Rams saw their six-game winning streak end with a 5-2 loss to Daniel Hand (7-4). Freshman Alex Orlins cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory to stay undefeated (10-0) at number one in singles.

Classmate Eva Curran posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory in fourth place.

On Friday, Cheshire travel to Eisenhower Park to meet host Lauralton Hall (6-6) at 3:45 p.m. On April 11, the Crusaders earned a 4-3 win at CHS.

Golf for boys (7-2)

Cheshire pits their three-game winning streak against Hamden (2-9) at CSC. Start time is 2:15 p.m.

In the April 18 opener at Laurel View Country Club, CHS took a 162-191 win over the Green Dragons.

Soft ball (11-4)

On a three-game winning streak, CHS take on Lyman Hall (2-13) at 4:15 p.m. In the first meeting on April 18, Cheshire won 13-1 at Wallingford.

Boys Lacrosse (10-2)

Winners of three consecutive games, the Rams host Lyman Hall (6-7) at 6 p.m.
