Des Moines, Iowa — Monday, February 28, 2022 — As the sun sets over Des Moines tonight, the usual oranges, reds and pinks will be accented with blues and yellows across several Des Moines bridges in a show of support for Ukraine.
Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie, who is also vice president of Mayors For Peace, said it was not just a symbolic gesture, but also an important step in representing the values of Monks.
“We share a goal with our friends and colleagues in Ukraine to live in a peaceful world without the devastating and deadly consequences we see unfold every day in Ukraine,” Cownie said. “Lighting up our bridges in Ukraine’s national colors won’t change anything about what’s happening there, but it sends the message that we stand up for Ukraine and, above all, we stand up for peace.”
Three city of Des Moines bridges with newer lighting technology will be lit in blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag every night for at least the next two weeks:
- Iowa Women’s Bridge
- Ruan connector
- Coleman Bridge
