Edinburgh Golf Club members call for cycle lanes to be removed so they can park

Members of Kingsknowe Golf Club in Edinburgh have launched a petition to have Spaces for People measures outside their club removed.

They have started a petition on Change.org titled ‘Removing Lanark Road people measurement spaces around Kingsknowe Golf Club’.

The petition, which was launched a day ago, has so far managed to collect around 217 signatures out of a target of 500.

The golf club says that before the traffic calming measures were introduced, members could use Lanark Road as overflow parking on competition weekends, which they say they cannot do now.

They say several of their members have complained to club leaders about the problem.

They also add that their members have no choice but to travel by car due to the equipment used to play golf.

The club has therefore asked Edinburgh City Council to remove the existing Spaces for People measures in order to accommodate their users.

The petition states: “Members of Kingsknowe Golf Club (East 1908) demand that the measures for people spaces be removed with immediate effect.

“Before the places for people were introduced, our members could use Lanark Road as an overflow for parking during major competition days.

“Since spaces for people were introduced this has not been possible and we have received a large number of complaints from members about this.

“Due to the equipment used in the sport, many of our members have to travel by car to be able to bring clubs, trolleys and other equipment. The use of public transport/other forms of transport is therefore not possible for members.

“We therefore call on Edinburgh City Council to remove the spaces measures for people from Lanark Road with immediate effect due to the current/long term impact it will have on our club.”

Stephanie-Ann Gornall commented in opposition to the petition by posting a few hours ago that: “The safety of children and adults using a healthy and sustainable mode of transport is much more necessary than the parking of cars. They can use some of their own land for cars if golfers are too lazy to use other modes of transport! »

A council spokesperson confirmed that any petition submitted to the council, which meets its criteria, will be considered in accordance with the petition process.
