The Fairfax County Park Foundation has named a family, organization and group of friends of the Park Authority as this year’s Eakin Philanthropy Awards recipients, honoring outstanding contributions to parks through the Park Foundation.
â¢ Wayne, Angela and the Valis family are recognized for their active involvement in various county parks over the past decade.
In 2017, they funded the TrackMan 4 golf simulator at the Valis Family Learning Center at Pinecrest Golf Center in Alexandria, and were the first major benefactors of two new picnic shelters in the children’s area of ââBurke Lake Park.
â¢ The foundation honors Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home and Fairfax Memorial Park for a partnership with the Park Authority dating back to 2003. It was at this point that Fairfax Memorial began sponsoring Braddock Nights, which is part of the popular series of Park Authority summer entertainment. Since then, they have donated $ 78,000 to help fund the free performances of Braddock Nights; in 2020, they sponsored the new children’s series Arts in the Parks at Wakefield Park in Annandale.
â¢ Friends of Colvin Run Mill will receive an Eakin Award for their partnership with the Park Foundation and their contribution to the preservation and protection of this historic property. Since 2010, the volunteer group has donated or provided in-kind support in excess of $ 185,000. In 2019, the group ratified a memorandum of understanding with the Park Authority, strengthening its relationship with the agency and the Park Foundation.
The Fairfax County Park Foundation supports the Park Authority by raising private funds, securing grants and creating partnerships that complement taxpayer dollars to meet the community’s needs for land, facilities and services. Park.
He created the Eakin Philanthropy Award to recognize visionary, financial and material contributions that dramatically improve Fairfax County parks.
The award is named in honor of LeRoy Eakin Sr., who donated 14 acres of land in 1951 which became Fairfax County’s first park.
This year’s winners will be honored in November.
