Thursday was a memorable night at Parkland with Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ baseball team honoring ten of their seniors.
The players have all been part of the Eagles’ incredible race to claim a victory at the state and national championships in 2021. Nine of the ten seniors are currently committed to college play: Maddox Raley, Cameron Harris, Grant McDonald , Sammy Beir, Santiago Ordonez. , Eduardo Fuentes, Chris Arroyo, Roman Anthony, Jake Clemente and Brandon White.
“They’re a great group and happy guys to be in, special for what they’ve done over the past two seasons,” head coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “It’s great to honor your elders, especially those who believe in what you do; great kids, great team, great families.
The Eagles went on to win 5-0 against Gulliver Prep School. Arroyo, who won MVP for MSD at the High School Baseball Invitational earlier this month, took the win on the mound with five scoreless innings. He also picked up his seventh win of the season, with Christian Rodiguez recording the last six outs.
All of the Eagles’ runs came in the third, with Rylan Lujo hitting in two with a single while Harris, Clemente and Nikko Benestad recorded RBIs.
MSD has moved to 23-2 this season and will be the top team in the district tournament. The Eagles will have a first-round bye before facing the winner of Coral Glades and Deerfield Beach High School before potentially a rematch against JP Taravella High School in the final.
