Parkland Victim’s Father on Thomas Massie Family Gun Photo: “Worst Taste Ever”

The father of a Parkland victim has spoken out against Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) after sharing a photo of himself and family members holding guns days after the Oxford high school shooting.

Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin, 17, was one of 17 people killed in the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Appeared on CNN on Saturday.

Earlier today, Massie shared a photo on Twitter that showed him and his family members posing with guns in front of a Christmas tree, with the caption: “Merry Christmas. PS. Santa, please bring ammo. “

The tweet was shared just days after the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School, Michigan, left four people dead and seven injured, reigniting the long national gun control debate.

Speaking to CNN’s Jim Acosta, Oliver gave his reaction after learning the tweet was all the rage and said it showed Americans need to carefully consider who they elect as their leaders.

Oliver added: “That’s a huge part of the problem. Someone, elected leaders like this who thinks that, I don’t know, if they’re trying to be ironic or funny or what but that ‘ is the worst taste ever you could manage on social media.

“It’s also something that should teach us who to elect and not. It’s a very unpleasant job.”

Acosta then asked Oliver if the message or similar statements “caused more pain?”

“No, the pain isn’t the issue here. Because the way we deal with it, and that’s probably a message to these Michigan families.” Olivier replied.

“I have a reason to continue to be a father, a good reason to continue to be a father. And it didn’t happen, I didn’t feel that immediately after losing Joaquin, but you start to feel that urgency. to do other things as a father. “

News week contacted rep Massie for comment.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, has been charged as an adult with first degree murder and terrorism, among other charges, after allegedly committing the Oxford High School shooting.

His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, were charged with four counts of manslaughter after their arrest in Detroit early Saturday morning. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to Education week, there have been 29 school shootings in the United States this year, including 21 since August 1.

The number is significantly higher than in 2020, when there were 10 school shootings, although Education week said the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to have been the cause of the lower figure.

Rep. Massie was criticized for posting on Twitter. In this photo, U.S. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) speaks during a press conference on U.S. Bill HR 428 at the Cannon House office building March 12, 2014 in Washington, DC.
