As expected, Noah Wagner took home the medalist crown and the Pueblo West High School boys’ golf team won the Region 1 Class 4A team title on September 20.
Playing the Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Wagner shot a 3-under-69 to win the individual title. The South-Central League medalist led the Cyclones to the tag team title, qualifying for the state meet on Oct. 4-5 at the Denver City Park Golf Course.
Joining Wagner in the state will be his teammates Preston Allen, Michael Whittlef and Cody Ingo.
Two teams and 13 individuals qualified for the state of regional.
Pueblo West won by eight strokes over Falcon in the team pursuit.
Evan Smith and Adam Romero from East, Niko Cozzetto from Pueblo County and Luis Contreras from Central also qualified for Pueblo.
“If our guys number 3 and 4 (Whittlef and Ingo) shoot in the ’70s, we generally do pretty well in tournaments,” said Pueblo West coach Dan Sanchez. “Wagner and Allen are generally near the top of the standings so we’re counting on those two other kids to score for our team.”

Sanchez believes his team have a chance to compete in the state meet despite Cheyenne Mountain being the prohibitive favorite.
“The course is neither very long nor very difficult,” said Sanchez. “This is a course that gets a lot of golfers to play well. It will be fair and unless they change the greens it will be straightforward golf.”
The Cyclones were fourth as a team last season and Wagner was 12th.
