The Boys & Girls Club of Binghamton celebrates its 38th annual golf tournament

APALACHIN (WBNG) — More than 20 teams participated in a captain and crew-style event Thursday at The Links golf course in Hiawatha to help support programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Binghamton.

Boys and Girls executive director Marybeth Smith said the funding helps many of their programs.

“We give them dinner every day, we do their homework. They need that security and they need the fun, and they need the laughter that comes with it, they need the support of the staff and the friendliness of the staff, so that’s a big deal,” said Smith.

With additional funds raised from the golf tournament, Smith said the organization provides her children with different experiences.

“We take them to Camp Sertoma, we like to get into the backyard with some of these bouncy houses, things like that. Things that our kids don’t normally enjoy,” she said.

Smith said many of the same teams return every year, but they also always welcome newcomers. She adds that the tournament has become something more than a game of golf.

“It’s a family, we talk about family all the time at the club with the kids, the staff, the board and the community because we have people who, if I need something, I pick up the phone and I visit them or whatever. just a family and I’m proud of that,” Smith said.
