The LAMPETER Leisure Center will close next month when work begins on controversial plans to turn the building into a wellness centre.
The wellness center will provide a wide range of services which address and enhance the physical, mental and social aspects of an individual’s wellbeing, Ceredigion County Council said.
The redevelopment will see a new fitness room created on the ground floor, a spin studio and a multipurpose room that can accommodate exercise classes on the first floor.
The plans faced strong opposition from the local community when they went ahead of planning.
Lampeter City Council opposed the downsizing of the sports hall, as did a local netball club, 18 residents and the town’s two county councilors.
A petition against the changes has attracted more than 600 signatures.
Plans were given the green light, however, and Ceredigion County Council revealed that work was due to start on the project, but a deal was struck between the council and the town’s university, allowing clubs to use the University of Wales Trinity facilities. Saint David Campus.

The town hall and the university are committed to continuing to work together even after the construction of the wellness center, to ensure the continuity and development of all the sports and activities currently practiced at the leisure center in Lampeter.
Cllr Catrin MS Davies, Cabinet Member of Ceredigion County Council for Culture, Leisure and Customer Services, said: “This significant capital investment in Lampeter Leisure Center will secure the future of the center for years and will meet the growing needs of children, young people, individuals and families in Lampeter and the surrounding area.
Use of the Lampeter campus facilities will begin the week of Monday, July 11, 2022 and will continue until construction is complete, which will take place in early 2023.
