SAN ANTONIO –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Women’s Vaqueros Golf Team posted a record 890 in three rounds to finish in fourth place at the 2022 Islander Classic on Tuesday at Brackenridge Park Golf Course.
The Vaqueros broke the previous program record of 904 set at the Pat Bradley Invitational in the fall of 2019.
The UTRGV started the day by concluding the second round, which was suspended on Monday due to darkness, with a score of 302. The Vaqueros came back strong in the final round with a one-round program record of 288, which broke the previous program’s record. of 293 which was also set in the first round of the 2019 Pat Bradley Invitational.
The Vaqueros finished just six shots behind Wofford for the tournament title as they finished with a score of 884 in three rounds. UTRGV finished five strokes behind Houston Baptist for second and four strokes behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for third, giving Corpus Christi three points in the South Texas Showdown, presented by the Navy Army Community Credit Union.
Former Brownsville Junior and Veteran Julie Lucia led the Vaqueros with a three-round 219, which is tied for the second-lowest three-round individual score in program history, as she finished tied for sixth. Lucio concluded his second round with his second straight 74 before posting a final round even par 71.
Second year Samantha Garza tied for 10and place as she posted a score of 222 in three rounds. Garza notched a second-round 78 before shaving eight shots in the final round with a one-under par 70, which is tied for the sixth-lowest round in program history.
Second year Sophie Tejeda tied for 16and place with a score of 225 in three rounds after posting three consecutive rounds of 75. Maria Jose Ramirez posted a score of 229 in three rounds to finish tied for 24and after carding a second round 80 and improving with a final round par 72.
Graduate student Rachel You finished tied for 42n/a with a score of 233 in three rounds after posting a second-round 75 and a last-round 76 as a sophomore Mercedes Vegawho played individually, finished tied for 61st with a three-round score of 238 after a second round 78 and a final round. 75.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on February 28 when they play at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The next South Texas Showdown event, presented by the Navy Army Community Credit Union, is at the UTRGV Invitational March 7-8 at McAllen Country Club.
